Korean Word Order Explained: Understand Any Sentence

by Hunmin Institute(훈민학당) 2026. 7. 25.

Korean Word Order Explained: Understand Any Sentence (한글 문장 조합의 원리 - 영어 어순을 뒤집어 익히는 한국어 어순)

학습 로드맵: 외국인 한글 공부 완전정복
Roadmap: How to Read Hangul for Foreigners

이전글 안내: 이 글은 외국인 한글 공부 시리즈 1부에서 4부를 마친 분들을 위한 스페셜 편입니다. 한글 읽기가 익숙해지셨다면 반드시 이 파트 한글 문장 조합의 원리를 공부하시길 바랍니다.
Previous Post: This is a special edition for those who have completed Parts 1 through 4 of the Hangul study series for foreigners. Once you are comfortable reading Hangul, be sure to study this part, the principles of Korean sentence construction.

이 글에 나오는 중요한 단어는 맨 아래 단어장에 발음 기호와 함께 정리해 두었습니다.
All key words in this article are listed with pronunciation at the bottom of the page.

한글을 읽을 수 있게 되었는데도 문장의 뜻이 잡히지 않는다면, 부족한 것은 단어가 아니라 순서입니다.
If you can read Hangul but still cannot grasp what a sentence means, what you lack is not vocabulary but word order.

한국어는 단어의 자리를 바꿔도 문장이 무너지지 않습니다.
In Korean, a sentence does not collapse even when you move words around.

조건은 하나, 동사가 맨 뒤에 있어야 합니다.
There is one condition: the verb must stay at the very end.

따라서 외국어 공부 시 단어는 품사를 함께 알고 익혀야 합니다.
This is why, when studying a foreign language, you must learn each word together with its part of speech.

어느 자리에 놓이는 단어인지는 품사가 정하기 때문입니다.
The part of speech is what decides where a word can go.

이 글은 여러분이 이미 알고 있는 영어 문장을 도구로 삼아 한국어 어순을 익히는 방법을 다룹니다.
This article shows you how to learn Korean word order by using the English sentences you already know as a tool.

영어는 설명을 위한 도구일 뿐이고, 목적지는 언제나 한국어 문장입니다.
English is only a tool for explanation; the destination is always the Korean sentence.

1. 영어와 한국어는 결론의 위치가 다릅니다
1. English and Korean Place the Conclusion in Different Positions

한 문장을 예로 들겠습니다.
Let us take one sentence as an example.

영어로 이렇게 말합니다. I saw BTS at the convenience store today.
In English you say: I saw BTS at the convenience store today.

영어는 결론을 먼저 말합니다.
English states the conclusion first.

주어 다음에 곧바로 동사가 나옵니다.
The verb comes immediately after the subject.

누가, 했다, 무엇을, 어디서, 언제의 순서입니다.
The order is who, did, what, where, when.

한국어는 반대입니다.
Korean is the opposite.

상황을 먼저 늘어놓고 동사로 문장을 닫습니다.
It lays out the context first and closes the sentence with the verb.

누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇을, 했다의 순서입니다.
The order is who, when, where, what, did.

그래서 같은 내용이 이렇게 바뀝니다. 나는 오늘 편의점에서 비티에스를 봤다.
So the same content becomes: naneun oneul pyeonuijeomeseo BTSreul bwatda.

영어를 배울 때 여러분은 이미 이 다섯 요소의 순서를 익혔습니다.
When you learned English, you already mastered the order of these five elements.

새로운 규칙을 처음부터 외울 필요가 없습니다.
There is no need to memorize a new rule from scratch.

알고 있는 순서를 뒤집으면 그것이 한국어 어순입니다.
Flip the order you already know, and that is Korean word order.

2. 같은 문장을 세 가지 순서로 배열해 봅니다
2. Arranging the Same Sentence in Three Different Orders

순서를 직접 옮겨 보면 규칙이 눈에 들어옵니다.
Once you move the words yourself, the rule becomes visible.

첫째, 영어 순서 그대로 옮긴 문장입니다. 나는 봤다 편의점에서 비티에스를.
First, the sentence copied straight from English order: naneun bwatda pyeonuijeomeseo BTSreul.

뜻은 짐작되지만 한국어 문장으로는 어색합니다.
The meaning is guessable, but it is awkward as a Korean sentence.

동사가 앞에 나와 있기 때문입니다.
That is because the verb sits at the front.

둘째, 한국어 순서로 바로잡은 문장입니다. 나는 오늘 편의점에서 비티에스를 봤다.
Second, the sentence corrected into Korean order: naneun oneul pyeonuijeomeseo BTSreul bwatda.

자연스러운 한국어 문장이 되었습니다.
Now it is a natural Korean sentence.

셋째, 가운데 순서를 다시 바꾼 문장입니다. 나는 비티에스를 오늘 편의점에서 봤다.
Third, the sentence with the middle rearranged again: naneun BTSreul oneul pyeonuijeomeseo bwatda.

순서가 달라졌지만 뜻은 그대로입니다.
The order has changed, but the meaning has not.

세 문장에서 변하지 않은 것이 있습니다.
Something stayed the same in all three sentences.

맨 앞의 나는과 맨 끝의 봤다입니다.
It is naneun at the very front and bwatda at the very end.

이 두 개가 문장의 기둥입니다.
These two are the pillars of the sentence.

기둥만 제자리에 있으면 가운데 요소는 자리를 옮겨도 문장이 살아 있습니다.
As long as the pillars stay in place, the middle elements can move and the sentence still stands.

3. 문장이 길어져도 앞과 뒤만 보면 됩니다
3. Even in a Long Sentence, Just Look at the Front and the End

한국어 문장은 길어질수록 가운데가 복잡해집니다.
The longer a Korean sentence gets, the more crowded its middle becomes.

시간, 장소, 대상, 이유가 줄줄이 붙습니다.
Time, place, target, and reason pile up one after another.

처음 배우는 학습자가 여기서 길을 잃습니다.
This is where beginning learners get lost.

그럴 때는 방법이 하나 있습니다.
There is one method for such moments.

문장이 길어 뜻이 잡히지 않으면 앞과 뒤를 보십시오.
When a sentence is long and the meaning will not come, look at the front and the end.

맨 앞에 누가 있고 맨 끝에 무엇을 했는지가 있습니다.
The front tells you who, and the end tells you what was done.

나는 어제 친구와 함께 명동에 있는 작은 식당에서 삼겹살을 먹었다.
Naneun eoje chinguwa hamkke Myeongdonge inneun jageun sikdangeseo samgyeopsareul meogeotda.

이 긴 문장도 앞의 나는과 뒤의 먹었다만 붙잡으면 골격이 드러납니다.
Even in this long sentence, holding on to naneun at the front and meogeotda at the end reveals the framework.

내가 먹었다는 것입니다.
It says that I ate.

나머지는 언제, 누구와, 어디서, 무엇을에 대한 설명입니다.
Everything else is explanation about when, with whom, where, and what.

이 방법은 듣기에서도 그대로 통합니다.
This method works the same way in listening.

한국인의 말이 빠르게 지나가도 문장의 끝을 놓치지 마십시오.
Even when a Korean speaker rushes past you, do not miss the end of the sentence.

결론은 언제나 마지막에 옵니다.
The conclusion always comes last.

4. 단어는 품사와 함께 익혀야 합니다
4. Learn Every Word Together with Its Part of Speech

어순을 알아도 단어를 아무 자리에나 놓으면 문장이 되지 않습니다.
Even if you know the word order, dropping words into random positions will not produce a sentence.

어느 자리에 놓이는 단어인지는 품사가 결정하기 때문입니다.
That is because the part of speech decides where a word belongs.

명사는 주어와 목적어 자리에 놓입니다.
Nouns take the subject and object positions.

동사는 문장 끝에 놓입니다.
Verbs go at the end of the sentence.

부사는 동사 앞에서 정도나 방법을 꾸밉니다.
Adverbs stand before the verb and describe degree or manner.

형용사는 상태를 나타내며 한국어에서는 동사처럼 문장 끝에 놓입니다.
Adjectives express a state and, in Korean, sit at the end of the sentence just like verbs.

그래서 단어를 외울 때 뜻만 적어 두면 절반만 익힌 것입니다.
So if you write down only the meaning when memorizing a word, you have learned only half of it.

이 글의 단어장에도 모든 단어에 품사를 함께 표기해 두었습니다.
In the vocabulary list of this article, every word is marked with its part of speech.

처음에는 명사와 동사부터 구분하십시오.
At first, simply distinguish nouns from verbs.

이 둘만 확실해져도 문장의 기둥을 세울 수 있습니다.
Once these two are clear, you can already raise the pillars of a sentence.

여기까지가 한국어 어순의 전부입니다.
That is the whole of Korean word order.

동사는 끝에 두고, 뜻이 안 잡히면 앞과 뒤를 보고, 단어는 품사와 함께 익힌다.
Put the verb at the end, look at the front and the end when the meaning escapes you, and learn each word with its part of speech.

이 세 가지면 한국어 문장이 다르게 보이기 시작합니다.
With these three, Korean sentences begin to look different to you.

한 가지 궁금증이 남으셨을 것입니다.
One question is probably still on your mind.

가운데 순서를 바꿔도 뜻이 그대로인 이유는 무엇일까요.
Why does the meaning stay the same even when the middle is rearranged?

한국어에는 각 단어의 역할을 표시해 주는 장치가 있기 때문입니다.
It is because Korean has a device that marks the role of each word.

은, 는, 이, 가, 을, 를, 에서 같은 짧은 말들입니다.
They are short forms such as eun, neun, i, ga, eul, reul, and eseo.

이 장치는 다음 글에서 다루겠습니다.
We will cover this device in the next article.

■ FAQ

Q1. 한국어 문장에서 순서를 마음대로 바꿔도 되나요?
Q1. Can I rearrange the order of a Korean sentence however I like?

A1. 동사만 맨 끝에 두면 가운데 요소는 비교적 자유롭게 옮길 수 있습니다. 다만 자연스러운 기본 순서는 누가, 언제, 어디서, 무엇을, 했다이므로 처음에는 이 순서로 익히는 것이 좋습니다.
A1. As long as the verb stays at the very end, the middle elements can move fairly freely. Still, the natural basic order is who, when, where, what, did, so it is best to learn that order first.

Q2. 영어를 모르면 이 방법을 쓸 수 없나요?
Q2. Can I still use this method if I do not know English?

A2. 영어는 설명을 돕는 도구일 뿐입니다. 자신의 모국어 순서와 한국어 순서를 비교해도 결과는 같습니다. 핵심은 한국어가 동사로 문장을 닫는다는 사실입니다.
A2. English is only a tool that supports the explanation. Comparing your own native word order with Korean gives the same result. The key point is that Korean closes a sentence with the verb.

Q3. 품사는 어디까지 알아야 하나요?
Q3. How much do I need to know about parts of speech?

A3. 처음에는 명사와 동사만 구분해도 충분합니다. 문장의 기둥이 이 둘이기 때문입니다. 형용사와 부사는 그다음에 익히십시오.
A3. At first, distinguishing nouns from verbs is enough, because these two are the pillars of a sentence. Learn adjectives and adverbs after that.
