In Part 2 we left Seoul and walked the east coast.
Part 3 brings us back into central Seoul.
This route begins at Gyeongbokgung Palace.
It was the main palace of the Joseon dynasty and draws more visitors than anywhere else in the city.
This article, however, is not only about the palace.
Two museums inside the grounds are free to enter, and just outside the walls, within walking distance, stands a museum of contemporary art.
Here is a route that carries you across the timeline of Korean art in a single day.
1. Gyeongbokgung, the Starting Point and the Anchor

Gyeongbokgung, built in 1395, was the first palace of the Joseon dynasty.
It connects directly to Gyeongbokgung Station on Subway Line 3, and is walkable from Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5.
There is one thing you must check before you go.
Gyeongbokgung closes every Tuesday.
Unlike most attractions in Korea, the closing day is Tuesday, not Monday.
Plenty of visitors arrive on the wrong day and find the gates shut.
There are four gates.
Gwanghwamun to the south is the main gate, with Yeongchumun to the west, Sinmumun to the north, and an eastern gate by the National Folk Museum.
Coming by subway, Gwanghwamun or Yeongchumun is closest; if you plan to head toward Samcheong-dong afterward, leave through the east gate.
Two places inside should not be missed.
Geunjeongjeon, the throne hall where the king received officials and held state ceremonies, sits at the center of the palace.
Gyeonghoeru is a pavilion raised over a pond, where banquets were held.
Its reflection on the water is well known, and many visitors stop here for photos.
The changing of the royal guard is also worth seeing.
It takes place twice a day in front of Gwanghwamun and reenacts the palace guard procedures of the Joseon era.
The exact times shift with the season, so check on the day of your visit.
2. Wear Hanbok and Entry Is Free

Gyeongbokgung charges admission.
But if you wear hanbok, it is free.
Nationality makes no difference; the rule applies to foreign visitors in exactly the same way.
There are conditions, however.
You must wear both the top and the bottom.
A jeogori with an overlapping collar paired with a skirt or trousers qualifies.
A jeogori over jeans, or hanbok trousers with a T-shirt, does not.
A few more details are worth knowing.
Both traditional hanbok and modern everyday hanbok count.
A jeogori without the usual tie strings is fine, as long as the collar overlaps.
A modern hanbok top that pulls over the head like a T-shirt does not qualify.
Neither does a one-piece hanbok dress without a jeogori.
Rental shops cluster around Gyeongbokgung Station, Gwanghwamun, and Samcheong-dong.
Rentals typically start at two-hour blocks, and full-day options are available.
Many shops include shoes and hair accessories.
One piece of advice.
Touring the palace means a lot of walking.
If you choose a long skirt, watch your footing on the steps and gravel paths, and ask for comfortable shoes if you can.
3. Two Museums Inside the Palace, Both Free

Once you buy your palace ticket and step inside, you will find two museums.
Neither charges a separate admission fee.
Many visitors see only the palace and leave; if you have the time, do go in.
The National Palace Museum stands just inside Gwanghwamun on the western side.
It gathers the objects the Joseon royal family actually used.
Royal seals and garments, court paintings, and astronomical instruments are on display.
It shows the texture of royal life in a way the buildings alone cannot.
The National Folk Museum sits on the eastern side of the grounds, at 37 Samcheong-ro, Jongno-gu, Seoul.

Its subject is not the court but the lives of ordinary people.
Farming tools, wedding and funeral customs, and seasonal traditions fill the halls.
The museum also has an outdoor section.
A recreated street from the 1970s and 1980s lets you walk past shops, an old tearoom, and a schoolhouse from that era.
Plenty of visitors enjoy this more than the indoor galleries.
Seeing both museums takes about two hours beyond your palace visit.
4. Beyond the Walls, through Samcheong-dong to the Contemporary Art Museum

Step out the eastern gate and the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul stands across the road.
It is an easy walk.
The museum covers modern Korean art and the work of artists practicing now.
Where the palace and folk exhibits show the past, this shows what is being made in Korea today.
The building itself is worth a look.
Built on a former military site, an old red-brick structure and a new one face each other across a courtyard.
A short walk further brings you to Samcheong-dong.
Hanok and modern buildings stand side by side along streets lined with cafes, galleries, and craft studios.
It is a good place to rest after a day of looking.
Here is a schedule that works without rushing.
The palace in the morning, one of the museums inside, the contemporary art museum after lunch, and a walk through Samcheong-dong to close.

■ FAQ
Q1. Can I not enter Gyeongbokgung without wearing hanbok?
A1. You can. Hanbok is simply the condition for free entry; without it you buy a ticket and go in as normal. There is no dress code. Given the nature of the site, though, tidy clothing is appreciated.
Q2. Can I see all four places in one day?
A2. It is possible, but you need to budget your time. Two to three hours at the palace, one to two at a museum inside, and one to two at the contemporary art museum fills a day. For a more relaxed pace, pick just one of the palace museums and spend the rest of your time walking Samcheong-dong.
Q3. Is information available in English?
A3. Yes. The palace, both museums inside, and the contemporary art museum all provide English signage and materials. Gyeongbokgung also runs English guided tours; check departure times and the meeting point at the ticket office on the day.
