Hunmin Institute: Where Your Korean Goal Becomes a Plan
훈민학당, 한국어 목표가 계획이 되는 곳
이 글에는 외국인 학습자를 위한 단어장이 함께 실려 있습니다. 본문 아래 단어장에서 발음과 뜻을 확인해 보세요.
At the bottom of this post, you will find a vocabulary and pronunciation guide for Korean learners.

한국어를 잘하고 싶다는 목표는 누구나 갖습니다. 그 목표가 계획으로 바뀌는 자리가 훈민학당입니다.
Everyone has the goal of getting good at Korean. Hunmin Institute is where that goal turns into a plan.
교재를 사고 영상을 보다가 멈춘 경험, 대부분 있으실 겁니다.
Most of you have bought a textbook, watched some videos, and then stopped.
자료가 부족해서가 아닙니다. 순서가 없기 때문입니다.
It was not for lack of material. It was for lack of order.
오늘 무엇을 하고 그다음에 무엇을 할지 정해지지 않으면 학습은 반드시 끊깁니다.
When what you do today and what comes next are not set, study always breaks off.
훈민학당은 그 순서를 설계해 둔 한국어 교육 사이트입니다.
Hunmin Institute is a Korean language education site built around that order.
이 글 하나로 여러분이 어디서 시작해 어디로 갈지가 정해집니다.
This single post will settle where you start and where you go next.
1. 한국어를 학문으로 다루지 않습니다
1. We Do Not Treat Korean as an Academic Subject

훈민학당은 전 세계 한국어 학습자를 위한 교육 사이트입니다.
Hunmin Institute is an education site for Korean learners around the world.
문법 용어를 외우게 하지 않습니다. 시험 문제 유형부터 가르치지 않습니다.
We do not make you memorize grammar terms. We do not start with test question types.
읽을 수 있어야 말할 수 있고, 아는 단어가 있어야 문장이 만들어집니다. 이 순서를 지킵니다.
You can speak only what you can read, and sentences form only from words you know. We keep that order.
한국어 읽기와 의미 파악이 학습의 기둥입니다.
Reading Korean and grasping its meaning are the pillars of study here.
일상과 문화와 여행이라는 실제 소재로 그 기둥을 세웁니다.
We raise those pillars with real subjects: daily life, culture, and travel.
2. 다섯 개의 길, 하나의 순서
2. Five Paths, One Order

사이트는 다섯 개의 카테고리로 나뉩니다. 소재는 다르지만 모두 하나의 학습 순서 위에 놓여 있습니다.
The site is divided into five categories. The subjects differ, but all of them sit on a single learning order.
| 카테고리 Category |

Reading Skills는 출발점입니다. 자음과 모음, 받침, 발음 규칙, 읽기 연습까지 네 편으로 한글 읽기가 완성됩니다.
Reading Skills is the starting point. Consonants and vowels, batchim, pronunciation rules, and reading practice complete Hangul reading in four parts.
Real Talk은 말하는 자리입니다. 입국심사와 매장과 미용실, 한국에서 실제로 마주할 상황의 문장을 다룹니다.
Real Talk is where you speak. Immigration, stores, salons: it covers sentences for situations you will actually meet in Korea.
K-Life는 살아가는 자리입니다. 비자와 행정, 앱과 시험. 이곳에서 처리해야 할 일을 한국어와 함께 익힙니다.
K-Life is where you live. Visas, paperwork, apps, exams: you learn what you must handle here along with the Korean for it.
K-Culture는 배경을 쌓는 자리입니다. 한글 창제의 역사부터 밥상 위의 말까지, 문화로 어휘를 늘립니다.
K-Culture is where you build background. From the creation of Hangeul to the words on a dinner table, culture widens your vocabulary.
K-Travel은 움직이는 자리입니다. 서울의 골목과 지방의 도시에서 쓰는 말을 배웁니다.
K-Travel is where you move. You learn the words used in Seoul's alleys and in cities beyond it.
어느 카테고리부터 읽으셔도 됩니다. 다만 Reading Skills만은 먼저 지나시기 바랍니다.
You may start with any category. Only Reading Skills should come first.
3. 수십 편을 엉성하게 보느니 한 편을 제대로
3. One Post Done Properly Beats Dozens Skimmed

훈민학당의 모든 글은 같은 구조를 갖습니다.
Every post on Hunmin Institute has the same structure.
한국어 문장과 영어 문장이 한 줄씩 나란히 놓이고, 맨 아래에는 발음 표기가 포함된 단어장이 실립니다.
Korean and English sit line by line, and each post ends with a vocabulary list including pronunciation.
소단락마다 상황을 보여주는 이미지가 들어갑니다.
Each section carries an image that shows the situation.
학습법은 일곱 단계로 고정되어 있습니다.
The study method is fixed at seven steps.
단어장을 먼저 훑고, 제목으로 주제를 잡고, 이미지로 상황을 파악하고, 영어로 뜻을 확인한 뒤 한국어를 소리 내어 읽고, FAQ에 스스로 답하고, 마지막에 단어장을 다시 봅니다.
Skim the vocabulary list, catch the topic from the title, read the situation from the image, grasp the meaning in English, then read the Korean aloud, answer the FAQ on your own, and study the vocabulary once more at the end.
일곱 단계가 길어 보이십니까.
Do seven steps look long?
이것은 많이 읽게 하려는 순서가 아니라 한 편을 끝까지 자기 것으로 만드는 방법입니다.
This is not an order designed to make you read more. It is a method for making one post entirely your own.
수십 편을 엉성하게 보느니 한 편을 제대로 보는 것이 바람직합니다.
One post done properly is worth more than dozens skimmed.
좋은 자료가 실력을 만들지 않습니다. 같은 순서로 반복할 수 있는 구조가 실력을 만듭니다.
Good material does not build ability. A structure you can repeat in the same order does.
4. 목표가 뚜렷하다면 구조부터 봅니다
4. If Your Goal Is Clear, Start with the Structure

토픽을 예로 들겠습니다.
Take TOPIK as an example.
많은 학습자가 토픽을 실력을 재는 시험으로 압니다. 아닙니다.
Many learners think TOPIK measures ability. It does not.
총점이 어느 구간에 들어가는지로 급수가 정해지는 배점 구조 시험입니다.
It is a scoring system in which your level is set by which band your total score falls into.
구조를 알면 준비가 달라집니다.
Once you know the structure, your preparation changes.
필요한 급수를 정하고, 그 급수의 점수를 역산하고, 어느 영역에서 점수를 확보할지 계산합니다.
Decide the level you need, work backward from the score it requires, and calculate which sections will secure those points.
4급이 목표인 사람과 6급이 목표인 사람은 같은 시험을 두고 전혀 다른 시간표를 씁니다.
Someone aiming for level 4 and someone aiming for level 6 write entirely different timetables for the same test.
훈민학당은 이렇게 접근합니다. 자료를 나열하지 않고 구조를 먼저 보여준 뒤 거기서 전략을 끌어냅니다.
This is how we work. We do not list material; we show the structure first and draw the strategy out of it.
토픽의 배점 구조를 다룬 글에서 그 방식을 직접 확인하실 수 있습니다.
You can see that approach for yourself in our post on how TOPIK scoring works.

5. 심볼에 담긴 뜻
5. What the Symbol Means

훈민학당의 심볼은 한글 창제의 철학을 현대적으로 옮긴 것입니다.
Our symbol carries the philosophy behind the creation of Hangeul into a modern form.

동그라미는 하늘입니다. 천지인 가운데 하늘이며 동시에 자음 이응입니다.
The circle is heaven. It is heaven among heaven, earth, and human, and at the same time the consonant ieung.
속이 꽉 찬 형태로 교육에 대한 신념을 나타냅니다.
Its solid form stands for firm conviction in education.
삼각형은 사람입니다. 천지인의 사람이며 자음 시옷을 기하학적으로 다듬은 형태입니다.
The triangle is the human. It is the human of that same triad, and a geometric refinement of the consonant siot.
두 요소는 겹치지 않고 맞닿아 있습니다.
The two elements do not overlap; they meet.
하늘 아래 사람이 중심이 되는 바른 교육, 세상과 사람을 잇는 언어 교육이라는 뜻입니다.
It means education that puts people at the center under heaven, and language teaching that connects people to the world.
맞물린 형태는 자음 히읗을 이룹니다.
Interlocked, they form the consonant hieut.
색은 태극기에서 가져왔습니다. 태극의 빨강과 파랑, 건곤감리의 검정. 세 가지뿐입니다.
The colors come from the Korean flag: the red and blue of the taegeuk, and the black of the four trigrams. Only three.
한 나라의 국기가 그 나라를 상징하듯 색만으로 대한민국을 말하게 했습니다.
Just as a flag stands for a nation, we let color alone speak for Korea.
저희가 가르치는 것은 언어만이 아니라 그 언어를 만든 나라와 사람들의 정신입니다.
What we teach is not only a language but the spirit of the country and the people who made it.
6. 지금 시작하는 자리
6. Where You Start Now

여기까지 읽으셨다면 순서가 보이실 것입니다.
If you have read this far, the order should be clear.
먼저 한글을 읽을 수 있어야 합니다.
First, you must be able to read Hangul.
이미 읽으신다면 받침과 발음 규칙이 정확한지 확인하십시오.
If you already can, check whether your batchim and pronunciation rules are accurate.
상급자도 이 부분이 어긋난 채 굳어 있는 경우가 많습니다.
Even advanced learners often carry fixed errors here.
그다음은 자유입니다.
After that, you are free.
말하고 싶으면 Real Talk으로, 살아야 한다면 K-Life로, 문화가 궁금하면 K-Culture로, 떠나고 싶으면 K-Travel로 가시면 됩니다.
Go to Real Talk to speak, K-Life to settle in, K-Culture for background, K-Travel to head out.
목표는 여러분이 정하고, 순서는 저희가 준비해 두었습니다.
You set the goal. We have prepared the order.
지금 바로 한글 읽기부터 시작하세요.

■ FAQ
Q1. 완전한 초보인데 어디서 시작해야 하나요
Q1. I am a complete beginner. Where should I start?
A1. Reading Skills의 한글 읽기 편부터 시작하십시오. 자음과 모음에서 출발해 네 편으로 한글 읽기가 완성됩니다. 그 뒤에는 어느 카테고리로 가셔도 됩니다.
A1. Start with the Hangul reading posts in Reading Skills. Beginning with consonants and vowels, four parts complete your Hangul reading. After that, any category is open to you.
Q2. 이미 한국어를 어느 정도 하는데 처음부터 봐야 하나요
Q2. I already know some Korean. Do I still need to start from the beginning?
A2. 한글 읽기 편은 실력과 무관하게 한 번 지나시기를 권합니다. 받침과 발음 규칙은 상급자도 어긋난 채 굳어 있는 경우가 많습니다. 확인만 하셔도 이후 학습이 훨씬 수월해집니다.
A2. We recommend passing through the Hangul reading posts once, whatever your level. Batchim and pronunciation rules are often fixed incorrectly even in advanced learners. A quick check alone makes everything afterward far easier.
Q3. 토픽을 준비하는 데도 도움이 되나요
Q3. Does this help with TOPIK preparation?
A3. 됩니다. 매일 문장을 읽고 어휘를 쌓는 습관이 토픽 읽기와 듣기의 기초 체력이 됩니다. 시험 구조와 배점을 다룬 글도 따로 준비되어 있습니다.
A3. Yes. The habit of reading sentences and building vocabulary daily becomes your foundation for the reading and listening sections. We also have a separate post on the structure and scoring of the test.
