■ How to Study Reading Skills
한국어 읽기 학습법

Step 1. Skim the vocabulary list at the bottom of the article to catch the key words and phrases.
1단계. 본문 맨 아래 단어장을 먼저 훑어보며 핵심 어구를 익힙니다.

Step 2. Read the title of the article to grasp the topic.
2단계. 본문 제목을 읽고 주제를 파악합니다.

Step 3. Move through each section, starting with the image.
3단계. 소단락을 하나씩 익히되, 이미지부터 파악합니다.

Step 4. Read the English of the section first and grasp the meaning of each sentence.
4단계. 소단락의 영어를 먼저 보고 문장 의미를 파악합니다.

Step 5. Now read the Korean aloud.
5단계. 이제 한국어를 읽어 봅니다.

Step 6. Try answering the FAQ on your own.
6단계. FAQ에 스스로 답해 봅니다.

Step 7. Study the vocabulary list once more at the end.
7단계. 마지막으로 단어장을 다시 공부합니다.

Q1. Why should I look at the vocabulary list first?

A1. 모르는 단어가 많은 상태로 본문에 들어가면 문장이 아니라 단어와 씨름하게 됩니다. 핵심 어구를 먼저 훑어 두면 본문을 읽을 때 의미 단위로 눈이 움직입니다. 처음에는 외우지 않아도 됩니다. 눈에 익히는 정도로 충분합니다.
A1. If you enter the text with many unknown words, you end up wrestling with words instead of sentences. Skimming the key phrases first lets your eyes move in units of meaning as you read. You do not need to memorize them at this stage. Simple familiarity is enough.

Q2. 영어를 먼저 읽으면 한국어 실력이 늘지 않는 것 아닌가요?
Q2. If I read the English first, will my Korean really improve?

A2. 순서가 중요합니다. 영어로 뜻을 먼저 잡고 한국어를 읽으면, 해석에 쓰던 힘을 문장 구조와 발음에 쓸 수 있습니다. 뜻을 모르는 문장을 소리 내어 읽는 것은 기억에 남지 않습니다. 의미를 아는 문장을 읽을 때 한국어가 몸에 붙습니다.
A2. The order matters. Once you grasp the meaning in English, you can spend your effort on sentence structure and pronunciation instead of decoding. Reading aloud a sentence you do not understand leaves no trace. Korean settles in when you read a sentence whose meaning you already know.

Q3. 초급자인데 한글 읽기 글부터 봐야 하나요?
Q3. I am a beginner. Should I start with the Hangul reading articles?

A3. 실력과 상관없이 모두 보시기를 권합니다. 상급자라도 받침과 발음 규칙은 흔히 어긋난 채 굳어 있습니다. 한글 읽기 1부부터 4부, 그리고 어순 원리까지 여섯 편이 훈민학당 학습의 기초입니다. 이 여섯 편을 지나면 다른 모든 글이 쉬워집니다.
A3. We recommend all learners read them regardless of level. Even advanced learners often carry fixed errors in final consonants and pronunciation rules. The six articles, Hangul reading parts one through four and the word order piece, form the foundation of study here. Once you pass them, every other article becomes easier.
