드라마를 보다가 이런 장면을 만난 적이 있으실 겁니다.
You may have come across a scene like this while watching a drama.

두 사람이 함께 걸어가는데 누군가 묻습니다.
Two people are walking together, and someone asks.

여친이야?
Is she your yeochin?

그러자 상대가 손사래를 치며 답합니다.
The other waves a hand and answers.

아니야, 여사친이야.
No, she is my yeosachin.

자막에는 둘 다 friend로 나오거나 girlfriend로만 나와서 무엇이 다른지 알 수 없습니다.
The subtitles render both as friend, or only as girlfriend, so the difference never comes through.

하지만 한국인에게 이 두 단어는 전혀 다른 관계를 뜻합니다.
To a Korean, however, these two words describe entirely different relationships.

차이는 가운데 글자 하나입니다.
The difference is a single syllable in the middle.

이 글에서는 그 한 글자가 무엇을 바꾸는지, 왜 이런 말이 생겨났는지, 그리고 실제 대화에서 어떻게 써야 하는지를 정리합니다.
This article covers what that one syllable changes, why such words came about, and how to use them in real conversation.

1. 한국인은 왜 말을 줄이는가
1. Why Koreans Shorten Their Words

한국어를 배우시는 분들이 교과서에서는 보지 못한 짧은 단어를 자주 마주치게 됩니다.
Learners of Korean often run into short words that never appear in their textbooks.

대부분 줄임말입니다.
Most of them are abbreviations.

원리는 단순합니다.
The principle is simple.

각 단어의 첫 글자만 남기고 붙입니다.
Keep the first syllable of each word and join them together.

언어학에서는 이를 두음 축약이라고 부릅니다.
Linguists call this initial-syllable clipping.

여자 사람 친구라는 세 덩어리에서 여, 사, 친을 하나씩 떼어 내면 여사친이 됩니다.
Take yeo, sa, and chin from the three parts of yeoja saram chingu and you get yeosachin.

여자친구에서 여와 친을 떼면 여친입니다.
Take yeo and chin from yeoja chingu and you get yeochin.

이 방식이 한국어에서 잘 작동하는 이유가 있습니다.
There is a reason this works so well in Korean.

한국어 어휘의 상당 부분이 한자어이고, 한자는 한 글자가 그 자체로 뜻을 지닙니다.
Much of the Korean vocabulary comes from Chinese characters, and each character carries meaning on its own.

여자의 여는 여자를 뜻하는 女이고, 친구의 친은 가깝다는 뜻의 親입니다.
The yeo of yeoja is 女, meaning woman, and the chin of chingu is 親, meaning close.

첫 글자만 남겨도 원래 의미가 살아 있는 것입니다.
Even a single syllable keeps the original meaning alive.

참고로 가운데 사는 한자가 아니라 고유어 사람의 첫 글자입니다.
Note that the sa in the middle is not a Chinese character but the first syllable of the native word saram, person.

줄임말이 늘어난 배경에는 문자 메시지가 있습니다.
Text messaging lies behind the rise of these abbreviations.

카카오톡 같은 메신저로 대화하는 시간이 길어지면서 짧게 쓰는 습관이 자리를 잡았습니다.
As more conversation moved to messenger apps like KakaoTalk, the habit of writing short took hold.

지금은 말할 때도 그대로 씁니다.
Now people use them in speech as well.

이 표현들은 국어사전에 실려 있지 않습니다.
These expressions are not found in the Korean dictionary.

젊은 세대가 자기들끼리 쓰기 시작한 말이 퍼진 것이기 때문입니다.
They began among younger Koreans, spreading from the way they talk to each other.

사전이 담지 못한 관계를 직접 이름 붙인 셈입니다.
In effect, they named relationships the dictionary had left unnamed.

이런 말은 정해진 규칙이라기보다 지금 만들어지고 있는 문화에 가깝습니다.
Words like these are less a fixed rule than a culture still being made.

그래서 시간이 지나면 새로 생기기도 하고 잘 쓰이지 않게 되기도 합니다.
Some will keep appearing, and others will quietly fall out of use.

쓰는 자리는 구분하십시오.
Mind where you use them.

친구끼리 나누는 대화나 메신저에서는 자연스럽지만, 업무 자리나 공식 문서에서는 줄이지 않은 형태를 씁니다.
They are natural among friends and in messages, while the workplace and formal documents call for the full forms.

2. 여사친, 사 한 글자가 만드는 거리
2. Yeosachin, the Distance Made by One Syllable

여사친은 여자 사람 친구의 줄임말입니다.
Yeosachin is short for yeoja saram chingu, woman person friend.

연애 감정이 개입되지 않은 여성 친구를 뜻합니다.
It means a female friend with no romantic feelings involved.

가운데 사가 하는 일이 큽니다.
The sa in the middle does a great deal of work.

사람이라는 뜻인데, 이 글자가 들어가는 순간 관계의 성격이 달라집니다.
It means person, and the moment it enters, the nature of the relationship changes.

여자 사람 친구라고 하면 여자이고, 사람이고, 친구라는 세 정보만 남습니다.
Woman, person, friend leaves you with exactly three pieces of information.

연인이라는 의미가 빠지는 것입니다.
The meaning of lover drops out.

이 말이 생겨난 배경도 살펴볼 만합니다.
The background to this word is worth a look.

남녀공학이 늘고 직장과 동아리에서 이성과 함께 지내는 시간이 길어지면서, 연인이 아닌 이성 관계를 설명할 단어가 필요해졌습니다.
As coeducation spread and people spent more time alongside the opposite sex at work and in clubs, a word was needed for non-romantic relationships between them.

여기에 메신저 중심의 대화가 더해졌습니다.
Messenger-based conversation added to this.

표정이나 말투가 전달되지 않는 문자에서는 관계를 한 단어로 못 박아 둘 필요가 커집니다.
In text, where expression and tone do not carry, the need to pin a relationship down in one word grows.

지금의 2030 세대가 관계의 경계를 분명히 하려는 태도와도 맞물려 있습니다.
It also fits how Koreans in their twenties and thirties prefer clear boundaries in relationships.

영어와 비교하면 이해가 빠릅니다.
A comparison with English makes this quicker to grasp.

영어에서 girlfriend는 연인을 뜻하지만 female friend는 그렇지 않습니다.
In English, girlfriend means a romantic partner while female friend does not.

한국어도 같은 구분을 하는데, 그 구분을 사라는 한 글자가 담당합니다.
Korean draws the same distinction, and a single syllable, sa, carries it.

다만 여기서 한 가지 다른 점이 있습니다.
There is one difference, though.

영어에서 girl friend를 띄어 쓰면 그저 여성인 친구를 뜻하고 그 이상의 규범은 따라오지 않습니다.
In English, girl friend written as two words simply means a friend who is female, and no further norms come with it.

한국의 여사친에는 태도가 함께 따라옵니다.
The Korean yeosachin brings conduct along with it.

연인이 아니라고 선을 그은 이상 그 선을 넘지 않는 것이 예의로 여겨집니다.
Once the line has been drawn, not crossing it is considered good manners.

상대에게 연인이 생기면 만남의 빈도를 줄이는 것도 자연스러운 일로 봅니다.
Seeing less of each other once one of them starts dating is treated as natural.

단어 하나가 관계의 규칙까지 담고 있는 셈입니다.
A single word carries the rules of the relationship with it.

남성형도 같은 방식입니다.
The male form works the same way.

남자 사람 친구를 줄이면 남사친이 되고, 연애 감정이 없는 남성 친구를 뜻합니다.
Namja saram chingu shortens to namsachin, a male friend with no romantic feelings.

이 표현에는 늘 따라붙는 질문이 있습니다.
One question always follows this word.

남자와 여자가 정말 그냥 친구가 될 수 있는가 하는 것입니다.
Can a man and a woman really be just friends?

한국에서도 오래된 논쟁이고, 사람마다 답이 다릅니다.
It is a long-running debate in Korea, and answers differ from person to person.

그래서 이 단어는 단순한 호칭이 아니라 관계를 설명하고 방어하는 말로도 쓰입니다.
So the word is not only a label but also a way to explain and defend a relationship.

걔는 그냥 여사친이야, 라는 문장이 그런 경우입니다.
"She's just my yeosachin" is exactly that kind of sentence.

3. 여친, 관계가 확정된 사이
3. Yeochin, a Relationship Already Confirmed

여친은 여자친구의 줄임말이고, 연인 관계를 뜻합니다.
Yeochin is short for yeoja chingu and means a romantic partner.

여사친과 다른 점은 서로의 마음이 확인되었다는 것입니다.
What separates it from yeosachin is that both hearts have been confirmed.

한국에서는 이 확인 과정을 중요하게 여깁니다.
Koreans treat that moment of confirmation as important.

사귀기로 한 날을 기억하고, 그날을 기준으로 100일, 200일을 세는 문화가 있을 정도입니다.
Couples remember the day they agreed to date and count 100 days, 200 days from it.

이 관계에는 배타성이 따릅니다.
The relationship carries exclusivity.

여친이라고 부르는 순간 다른 사람과의 관계에는 선이 그어집니다.
The moment someone is called yeochin, a line is drawn around other relationships.

그래서 한국인에게 여사친을 여친이라고 잘못 부르는 것은 가벼운 실수가 아닙니다.
For Koreans, then, calling a yeosachin a yeochin is no small slip.

드라마에서 이 두 단어가 교차하는 장면이 자주 나오는 이유도 여기에 있습니다.
This is why dramas so often stage scenes where the two words cross.

여사친이라 부르던 사람을 여친이라 부르는 순간이 곧 관계의 전환입니다.
The moment a yeosachin becomes a yeochin is the turning point itself.

대사 한 줄로 고백을 대신하는 것입니다.
A single line of dialogue stands in for a confession.

한국 드라마를 보실 때 이 장면을 눈여겨보시면 대사의 무게가 다르게 들립니다.
Watch for that scene in a Korean drama and the line will carry a different weight.

남성형은 남친이며, 남자친구의 줄임말입니다.
The male form is namchin, short for namja chingu.

4. 실제로 어떻게 쓰이는가
4. How These Words Are Actually Used

드라마 대사에서 자주 나오는 문장을 그대로 가져와 보겠습니다.
Here are lines you will hear often in dramas, just as they are said.

걔 내 남친 아니야, 내 남사친이야.
He is not my namchin, he is my namsachin.

오해를 바로잡는 가장 흔한 문장입니다.
This is the most common line for correcting a misunderstanding.

우리 그냥 여사친 사이야.
We are just yeosachin.

관계를 분명히 밝힐 때 씁니다.
This is used to state a relationship clearly.

너 여친 있어?
Do you have a yeochin?

상대의 연애 상태를 묻는 표현입니다.
This asks about someone's relationship status.

처음 만난 사이에서는 조금 직접적이니, 친해진 뒤에 쓰시는 편이 좋습니다.
It is a little direct for a first meeting, so save it until you know each other.

주의하실 점을 정리합니다.
A few cautions.

첫째, 격식을 갖춘 자리에서는 쓰지 마십시오.
First, do not use these in formal settings.

회사 상사나 처음 만난 어른에게는 여자친구, 남자친구처럼 줄이지 않은 형태를 쓰는 것이 안전합니다.
With a boss or an older person you have just met, the unshortened yeoja chingu and namja chingu are safer.

둘째, 여자친구와 여자 사람 친구를 혼동하지 마십시오.
Second, do not confuse yeoja chingu with yeoja saram chingu.

줄이지 않은 형태에서도 두 표현은 다릅니다.
Even unshortened, the two mean different things.

여자친구는 연인이고, 여자 사람 친구는 친구입니다.
Yeoja chingu is a partner; yeoja saram chingu is a friend.

셋째, 상대의 관계를 먼저 단정하지 마십시오.
Third, do not define someone's relationship for them.

한국에서는 상대가 스스로 소개하기 전에 관계를 규정하는 것을 실례로 봅니다.
In Korea, labeling a relationship before the person introduces it themselves is considered rude.

함께 있는 두 사람을 보고 여친이냐고 묻기보다, 상대가 여사친이라고 소개하면 그대로 받아들이는 편이 좋습니다.
Rather than asking whether she is a yeochin, take it as given when someone introduces her as a yeosachin.

옆에 있는 사람이 누구인지 궁금할 때는 어떻게 아는 사이예요, 라고 물으시면 무례하지 않게 대화를 이어 갈 수 있습니다.
If you are curious who the person beside them is, asking "How do you two know each other?" keeps the conversation polite.

한국어에는 이런 줄임말이 아주 많습니다.
Korean has a great many abbreviations like these.

앞으로도 재미있는 은어와 줄임말을 하나씩 소개해 드리겠습니다.
We will keep introducing entertaining slang and abbreviations, one at a time.

■ FAQ

Q1. 여사친과 여친을 잘못 말하면 큰 실수인가요?
Q1. Is mixing up yeosachin and yeochin a serious mistake?

A1. 상황에 따라 다릅니다. 학습자가 실수하는 것은 대부분 웃고 넘어갑니다. 다만 한국인끼리는 이 구분이 분명해서, 여사친을 여친이라고 부르면 연인 사이로 오해받을 수 있습니다. 확실하지 않을 때는 그냥 친구라고 말씀하시는 편이 안전합니다.
A1. It depends. When a learner slips, people usually laugh it off. Between Koreans, though, the distinction is sharp, and calling a yeosachin a yeochin can suggest the two are dating. When in doubt, simply say chingu, friend.

Q2. 이 표현들을 어른에게 써도 되나요?
Q2. Can I use these expressions with older people?

A2. 권하지 않습니다. 줄임말은 또래나 친한 사이에서 쓰는 비격식 표현입니다. 나이가 많은 분이나 직장 상사에게는 여자친구, 남자친구처럼 줄이지 않은 형태를 쓰시는 것이 좋습니다.
A2. Not advisable. Abbreviations are informal, meant for peers and close friends. With someone older or a supervisor at work, use the full forms yeoja chingu and namja chingu.

Q3. 남녀가 정말 친구가 될 수 있다고 한국인들은 생각하나요?
Q3. Do Koreans believe men and women can really be just friends?

A3. 의견이 갈립니다. 가능하다고 보는 사람도, 어렵다고 보는 사람도 많습니다. 이 논쟁 자체가 여사친이라는 단어가 만들어진 이유이기도 합니다. 관계를 분명히 설명할 단어가 필요했기 때문입니다.
A3. Opinions divide. Plenty say yes, plenty say it is difficult. That very debate is part of why the word yeosachin exists at all: people needed a word to state the relationship clearly.
