이 글에는 외국인 학습자를 위한 단어장이 함께 실려 있습니다. 본문 아래 단어장에서 발음과 뜻을 확인해 보세요.
This article includes a vocabulary list for foreign learners. Check the pronunciation and meanings in the list below the main text.

한글은 배우기 쉽지만 읽기는 어렵습니다.
Hangul is easy to learn but hard to read aloud.
자모를 다 외우고 글자를 조립할 수 있게 되었는데도 한국인의 말이 자막과 다르게 들린다면, 원인은 하나입니다.
If you have memorized every letter and can assemble syllables, yet Korean speech still sounds different from the subtitles, there is one reason.
한국어는 글자가 이어질 때 소리가 바뀌기 때문입니다.
Korean changes its sounds when letters meet.
이것은 예외가 아니라 규칙이며, 국립국어원 표준 발음법에 정리되어 있습니다.
These are not exceptions but rules, set out in the Standard Korean Pronunciation Rules of the National Institute of Korean Language.
이 글에서는 초급 학습자가 가장 자주 마주치는 네 가지 변화, 연음법칙과 경음화, 격음화, 비음화를 정리합니다.
This article covers the four changes beginners meet most often: liaison, tensification, aspiration, and nasalization.
이 네 가지만 알아도 드라마 대사와 노래 가사가 다르게 들리기 시작합니다.
Know just these four and drama lines and song lyrics start to sound different to you.
1. 소리가 바뀌는 이유
1. Why the Sounds Change

한국어에서 소리가 바뀌는 이유는 단순합니다.
The reason Korean sounds shift is simple.
말하기 편한 쪽으로 움직이기 때문입니다.
They move toward whatever is easier to say.
한글은 글자를 소리 나는 대로 적는 문자로 만들어졌지만, 오랜 시간 쓰이면서 표기는 그대로 두고 발음만 변하는 구간이 생겼습니다.
Hangul was created to write sounds as they are spoken, but over centuries of use, places appeared where the spelling stayed fixed while the pronunciation moved.
예를 들어 국물이라는 단어를 그대로 발음하려면 혀가 ㄱ에서 ㅁ으로 갑자기 이동해야 합니다.
To say the word 국물 exactly as written, the tongue would have to jump abruptly from ㄱ to ㅁ.
실제로 한국인은 궁물이라고 발음합니다.
In practice Koreans say 궁물.
ㄱ이 뒤따르는 ㅁ의 성질을 미리 받아들여 ㅇ으로 바뀐 것입니다.
The ㄱ takes on the quality of the following ㅁ in advance and becomes ㅇ.
또 하나 알아 두실 것이 있습니다.
There is one more thing worth knowing.
받침으로 실제 소리가 나는 자음은 일곱 개뿐입니다.
Only seven consonants are actually pronounced in the final position.
ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, ㅇ입니다.
They are ㄱ, ㄴ, ㄷ, ㄹ, ㅁ, ㅂ, and ㅇ.
표기상 다른 자음이 받침에 오더라도 이 일곱 개 중 하나로 바뀌어 소리 납니다.
Even when another consonant is written there, it is pronounced as one of these seven.
부엌의 ㅋ이 ㄱ으로, 옷의 ㅅ이 ㄷ으로 소리 나는 것이 그 예입니다.
The ㅋ in 부엌 sounds as ㄱ, and the ㅅ in 옷 sounds as ㄷ.
이 원리를 알고 나면 아래의 규칙들이 외워야 할 목록이 아니라 이해할 수 있는 흐름으로 보입니다.
Once you grasp this principle, the rules below stop looking like a list to memorize and start looking like a logic you can follow.
2. 연음법칙, 받침이 넘어가는 규칙
2. Liaison, When the Final Consonant Moves Over

가장 먼저 익혀야 할 규칙입니다.
This is the first rule to learn.
받침이 있는 글자 다음에 모음으로 시작하는 글자가 오면, 받침이 다음 글자의 첫소리 자리로 넘어갑니다.
When a syllable with a final consonant is followed by one beginning with a vowel, the final consonant moves into the initial slot of the next syllable.
넘어가는 이유는 자리가 비어 있기 때문입니다.
It moves because that slot is empty.
한글에서 ㅇ은 첫소리 자리에서 아무 소리도 내지 않습니다.
In Hangul, ㅇ makes no sound in the initial position.
빈자리인 셈입니다.
It is effectively a placeholder.
앞 글자의 받침이 그 빈자리로 옮겨 가 발음됩니다.
The final consonant of the preceding syllable slides into that empty slot and is pronounced there.
한국어라는 단어를 예로 들어 보겠습니다.
Take the word 한국어.
글자만 보면 한, 국, 어 세 덩어리지만 실제로는 한구거로 소리 납니다.
On the page it is three blocks, 한, 국, 어, but it is pronounced 한구거.
국의 받침 ㄱ이 어의 빈자리로 넘어갔습니다.
The ㄱ of 국 has moved into the empty slot of 어.
이 규칙은 조사가 붙을 때 특히 자주 나타납니다.
This rule appears most often when particles are attached.
한국어는 명사 뒤에 조사가 붙는 언어이고, 조사는 대부분 모음으로 시작하기 때문입니다.
Korean attaches particles after nouns, and most particles begin with a vowel.
봄날이 봄나리로, 꽃을이 꼬츨로 소리 나는 것이 모두 같은 원리입니다.
봄날이 sounding as 봄나리 and 꽃을 as 꼬츨 follow the same principle.
연음은 규칙이라기보다 습관에 가깝습니다.
Liaison is less a rule than a habit.
글자를 하나씩 끊어 읽지 말고 이어서 읽는 연습을 하시면 자연스럽게 몸에 익습니다.
Practice reading in connected stretches rather than one block at a time, and it settles in on its own.

3. 경음화와 격음화, 소리가 세지는 규칙
3. Tensification and Aspiration, When Sounds Grow Stronger

두 규칙은 성격이 비슷합니다.
These two rules are similar in nature.
뒤에 오는 소리가 더 강해진다는 점에서 같고, 강해지는 방향이 다릅니다.
Both strengthen the following sound, but they strengthen it in different directions.
경음화는 된소리가 되는 변화입니다.
Tensification turns a consonant tense.
받침 ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ 뒤에 ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅅ, ㅈ이 오면 각각 ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, ㅉ으로 바뀝니다.
After the final consonants ㄱ, ㄷ, or ㅂ, the consonants ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅅ, and ㅈ become ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ, and ㅉ.
학교를 학꾜로, 국밥을 국빱으로 발음하는 것이 이 규칙입니다.
Saying 학교 as 학꾜 and 국밥 as 국빱 is this rule at work.
앞 받침에서 숨이 막혔다가 터지면서 뒤 자음에 힘이 실리기 때문입니다.
The breath is blocked at the final consonant and then released, and that force lands on the next consonant.
격음화는 거센소리가 되는 변화입니다.
Aspiration turns a consonant aspirated.
ㅎ이 관여합니다.
ㅎ is involved.
받침 ㅎ이 다음 글자의 ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, ㅈ과 만나면 ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, ㅊ으로 바뀝니다.
When a final ㅎ meets ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ, or ㅈ in the next syllable, they become ㅋ, ㅌ, ㅍ, and ㅊ.
좋다가 조타로, 축하가 추카로 발음되는 것이 그렇습니다.
좋다 is pronounced 조타, and 축하 is pronounced 추카.
ㅎ은 자신의 소리를 없애는 대신 상대를 거세게 만듭니다.
ㅎ gives up its own sound and makes its neighbor stronger instead.
ㅎ은 한국어에서 가장 활발하게 움직이는 자음입니다.
ㅎ is the busiest consonant in Korean.
위처럼 상대를 바꾸기도 하지만, 뒤에 모음이 오면 아예 소리가 사라지기도 합니다.
It transforms its neighbor as above, but when a vowel follows, it disappears altogether.
좋아요를 조아요로 발음하는 것이 그 경우입니다.
좋아요 pronounced as 조아요 is that case.
이때는 격음화가 아니라 ㅎ 탈락입니다.
This is not aspiration but ㅎ deletion.
두 가지를 구분해 두시면 좋습니다.
It helps to keep the two apart.

4. 비음화, 코로 나가는 소리
4. Nasalization, Sounds That Go Through the Nose

비음은 코로 공기가 나가면서 나는 소리입니다.
A nasal is a sound made as air passes through the nose.
한국어에서는 ㄴ, ㅁ, ㅇ이 여기 해당합니다.
In Korean these are ㄴ, ㅁ, and ㅇ.
비음화는 받침 ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ이 ㄴ이나 ㅁ 앞에서 각각 ㅇ, ㄴ, ㅁ으로 바뀌는 현상입니다.
Nasalization is when the final consonants ㄱ, ㄷ, and ㅂ become ㅇ, ㄴ, and ㅁ before ㄴ or ㅁ.
국물이 궁물로, 받는이 반는으로, 합니다가 함니다로 소리 납니다.
국물 becomes 궁물, 받는 becomes 반는, and 합니다 becomes 함니다.
이 규칙은 존댓말에서 특히 중요합니다.
This rule matters most in polite speech.
한국어의 정중한 말끝인 합니다는 거의 언제나 함니다로 발음됩니다.
The polite ending 합니다 is almost always pronounced 함니다.
뉴스 앵커도, 식당 직원도 마찬가지입니다.
News anchors and restaurant staff alike.
글자 그대로 합니다라고 또박또박 발음하면 오히려 어색하게 들립니다.
Pronouncing it letter by letter as 합니다 actually sounds unnatural.
비음화를 익히면 듣기가 크게 편해집니다.
Learning nasalization makes listening far easier.
한국어에서 가장 자주 쓰이는 말끝이 이 규칙의 적용을 받기 때문입니다.
The most frequent sentence ending in Korean is governed by this rule.

5. 규칙을 몸에 익히는 방법
5. How to Make the Rules Stick

네 가지 규칙을 다 읽으셨다면 이제 외우려 하지 마시기 바랍니다.
Now that you have read all four rules, do not try to memorize them.
규칙은 외우는 것이 아니라 확인하는 것입니다.
Rules are not for memorizing but for confirming.
먼저 소리부터 들으십시오.
Start with the sound.
짧은 문장을 한국인 발음으로 듣고, 자막을 보면서 어느 부분이 다르게 들리는지 표시합니다.
Listen to a short sentence spoken by a Korean, follow the subtitles, and mark where what you hear differs.
그 지점이 대부분 위 네 가지 중 하나입니다.
That spot is almost always one of the four above.
다음으로 소리 내어 읽으십시오.
Next, read aloud.
눈으로만 보면 규칙은 지식으로 남고, 입으로 내면 습관이 됩니다.
Read only with your eyes and a rule stays knowledge; say it aloud and it becomes habit.
하루 다섯 문장이면 충분합니다.
Five sentences a day is enough.
마지막으로 끊어 읽지 마십시오.
Finally, do not read in broken pieces.
한 글자씩 또박또박 읽는 습관이 있으면 연음이 일어나지 않아 계속 어색하게 들립니다.
If you read one block at a time, liaison never happens and your speech keeps sounding stiff.
두세 글자를 한 덩어리로 묶어 읽는 연습을 하시면 발음이 자연스러워집니다.
Practice reading two or three syllables as a single chunk and your pronunciation smooths out.
4부에서는 자음과 모음을 조합한 표를 보며 실제 문장을 읽는 연습을 다룹니다.
Part 4 works through a consonant and vowel combination chart and moves into reading real sentences.

■ FAQ
Q1. 왜 한국어는 글자 그대로 읽지 않나요?
Q1. Why is Korean not read exactly as it is written?
A1. 소리를 편하게 내기 위한 자연스러운 변화입니다. 받침과 다음 글자가 이어질 때 발음 기관이 편한 방향으로 소리가 조정됩니다. 이는 오류가 아니라 모든 언어에 존재하는 현상이며, 한국어의 경우 국립국어원 표준 발음법에 규칙으로 정리되어 있습니다.
A1. It is a natural adjustment that makes speech easier. When a final consonant meets the next syllable, the sound shifts toward whatever the speech organs find comfortable. This is not an error but something present in every language, and in Korean it is codified in the Standard Korean Pronunciation Rules of the National Institute of Korean Language.
Q2. 네 가지 규칙을 모두 외워야 하나요?
Q2. Do I have to memorize all four rules?
A2. 외우지 않으셔도 됩니다. 규칙을 알고 나면 들을 때 확인이 되고, 확인이 반복되면 자연히 익습니다. 다만 순서를 정한다면 연음부터 익히시기를 권합니다. 가장 자주 나타나고 다른 규칙의 바탕이 됩니다.
A2. You do not have to. Once you know a rule, you confirm it as you listen, and repeated confirmation makes it stick. If you want an order, start with liaison. It appears most often and underlies the others.
Q3. 발음 규칙을 몰라도 대화는 통하나요?
Q3. Can I still communicate without knowing the pronunciation rules?
A3. 통합니다. 다만 상대의 말을 알아듣기가 어려워집니다. 말하기는 조금 어색해도 전달되지만, 듣기는 규칙을 모르면 들리는 소리와 아는 단어가 연결되지 않습니다. 그래서 듣기를 위해 먼저 익히시는 편이 좋습니다.
A3. Yes. What suffers is understanding others. Slightly stiff speech still gets through, but in listening, without the rules the sounds you hear never connect to the words you know. That is why it is worth learning them for the sake of listening.
