Before starting real conversation, check your Hangul reading level first.
At the bottom of this post, you will find a vocabulary and pronunciation guide for Korean learners.

Your heart races when you stand in front of the immigration desk.
It is because you do not know what will be asked.
In fact, though, the questions are fixed.
There are five of them.
By the end of this post you will know what those five are and how to answer them.
It also covers the arrival procedure that changed completely in 2026, along with the customs rules.
For anyone who arrives prepared, Incheon Airport is a thirty-second gate.
1. There Are Four Gates to Clear at the Airport

From the moment you step off the plane until you walk out of the airport, the order is fixed.
Not knowing it is how people end up in the wrong queue.
Step |
What Happens |
Estimated Time |
| 1. 검역 1. Quarantine |
A fever check, plus a health declaration if it applies to you |
1 to 3 minutes |
2. Immigration |
Your passport and digital arrival record are checked, and five questions are asked |
5 to 30 minutes including the queue |
3. Baggage Claim |

| 4. 세관 4. Customs |
Declare anything required; with nothing to declare you walk straight through |
1 to 5 minutes |
There is one very common misunderstanding.
People assume that clearing immigration is the end of it.
It is not.
After you collect your bags, customs is still ahead of you.
The moment you relax after the desk is exactly where mistakes happen.
2. There Are Only Five Questions

What the officer asks is nearly the same every time.
The questions are not there to work out who you are; they check that what you wrote matches what is true.
The Officer Asks |
Answer Like This |
What brings you here? |
I'm here to travel. |
How long will you stay? |
One week. |
Where will you be staying? |
At a hotel in Seoul. |
What is your occupation? |
I'm an office worker. |
Do you have a return ticket? |
Yes, here it is. |
That is all of it.
The questions usually come in English, but answering even one line in Korean changes the air in the room.
It is also the first stage on which you get to use the Korean you have learned.
3. Three Principles for Answering

Short. Truthful. Without hesitation.
These three are everything.
Let us take them one at a time.
Answer short because the officer is not looking for a long explanation.
Saying you are here to travel is enough.
Start describing your itinerary and the questions multiply instead.
The reason to answer truthfully is obvious.
If your words differ from your paperwork, the verification drags on.
Save your accommodation address on your phone beforehand.
This single item costs travelers more time than anything else.
The reason not to hesitate is a little different.
Looking unprepared adds one more question.
The officer cannot tell hesitation from not knowing the answer apart from hesitation over unfamiliar Korean.
For the moment words fail you, keep these two lines in your phone notes.
If nothing comes out, just show the screen.
I don't speak Korean. Could you speak in English?
Here is my hotel booking and return ticket.
4. On January 1, 2026, the Yellow Paper Disappeared

The more often you have visited Korea, the more this part throws you.
The paper arrival card once handed out on the plane is gone.
From January 1, 2026, Korea moved to a digital arrival declaration known as the e-Arrival Card.
You can submit it on the official site from three days before arrival, and you receive a confirmation screen on your phone.
At the desk, you simply show that screen.
One point must be made clearly here.
This procedure is free.
Official Korean government addresses end in go.kr.
Lookalike agency sites rank high in search results and charge tens of dollars in fees.
The test is simple.
If it asks for money, it is not the official channel.
Rather than searching for it, check the address and go there directly.
One practical piece of advice: do not leave it until you land.
Filling out forms on airport wifi after a long flight is as tiring as it gets.
Finish it the day before you fly and you are done.
5. K-ETA or e-Arrival Card: You Will Do One of Them

Many people confuse these two.
Understand the structure and it is simple.
K-ETA is the electronic travel authorization for visitors entering without a visa.
Nationals of 67 countries are currently exempt from applying, and that exemption has been extended through December 31, 2026.
The United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are among them.
This is where the problem arises.
Being exempt from K-ETA does not mean there is nothing to do.
Holders of a valid K-ETA are exempt from the e-Arrival Card, while those entering without one must submit it.
Put simply:
With a K-ETA you do not need the e-Arrival Card; without a K-ETA you do.
Skipping both applies mainly to registered foreign residents in Korea.
The exempt country list and its period change with policy.
Checking once with the official agency for your own nationality before departure is the surest route.
Outdated guidance left online is what causes trouble.
6. Customs Lines and the Numbers to Remember

Once you have your bags, this is the last gate.
With nothing to declare, most people walk right through.
Still, it helps to know what to say if you are asked.
What You Hear at Customs |
What You Say |
Do you have anything to declare? |
No, nothing. |
What is this? |
It's a gift. |
When you need to ask |
Do I need to declare this? |
Keep a few numbers in mind as well.
Korea's basic duty-free allowance is USD 800 per person.
Separately, alcohol is exempt up to two bottles totaling 2 liters and USD 400, tobacco up to 200 cigarettes, and perfume up to 100 milliliters.
Cash and other means of payment exceeding USD 10,000 must be declared.
The items travelers get caught with are fairly predictable.
Processed meat, fresh fruit, and seeds.
A single sausage or one apple is still subject to quarantine.
Snacks packed for the journey often fall into this category.
One thing to remember.
When in doubt, declare it.
Voluntary declaration earns a duty reduction, while an undeclared item found later brings a penalty.
The system is not built to punish you for declaring.
7. How to Get Through Without Queuing

Incheon Airport has automated immigration gates.
Short-term visitors from 42 countries can use them, passing through by machine with no conversation at all.
A small irony appears here.
You may enter the country without using a single one of the five exchanges you just learned.
Prepare anyway.
The automated gate is not always available, and the rules may change by your next visit.
8. The Thirty Minutes After the Desk

There is a stretch that strands travelers more often than immigration does.
The thirty minutes after the doors open past customs.
The first thing you need is connectivity.
Opening a map, contacting your accommodation, booking a ride: all of it needs internet.
Buying a SIM at the airport means another queue, so arranging an eSIM or reserving a pocket wifi before you fly is faster.
Next comes getting into the city.
The airport express train is the most predictable route into central Seoul, while a pickup service suits heavy luggage or a group.
For a late-night arrival, check in advance what is still running at your landing time.
At this point, your arrival is complete.
But one thing remains.
The five exchanges you learned here keep working long after you leave the airport.
What brought you here, how long you are staying, where you are staying, what you do.
These are precisely the first questions the people you meet in Korea will ask you.
Immigration is not a test. It is your first conversation in Korea.
This is all the preparation you need. Now you can come to Korea.
Welcome to Korea.
