Exchange Student vs Language Course: Two Korean Student Visas
Before learning the Korean you need for daily life, check your Hangul reading level first.
This article includes a vocabulary list for foreign learners. Check the pronunciation and meanings in the list below the main text.

Once you have decided to study in Korea, the next decision matters far more.
Which visa you enter on.
Exchange students and language students are both students, and both head to a university campus.
So they look like the same thing.
Open the file, though, and they are different systems.
When you can start working part-time and for how many hours, how much must sit in your bank account, whether you can move on to a degree course later, all of it is decided here.
Choose wrong and it takes months to undo.
This article covers how the two differ and what to check before you apply.
1. The Two Visas Are Classified Differently

Korean residence statuses carry codes made of a letter and numbers.
Those for students begin with D.
Exchange students fall under the D-2 group.
This status is named for degree study, and students sent under an inter-university exchange agreement are included in it.
The specific code for exchange students is D-2-6.
Language study falls under the D-4 group.
This status is named for training, and studying Korean at a university language institute is D-4-1.
The line between them is simple.
Whether you earn academic credit.
An exchange student takes classes in Korea under an agreement between their home university and a Korean one, and earns credit.
That credit counts toward graduation back home.
Language study is different.
The aim is Korean proficiency; a certificate is issued, but it leads to no degree or credit.
On the same campus, the paperwork makes you a different person.
That difference runs through everything.
2. The Exchange Student Visa, for Students Who Earn Credit

With an exchange visa, your home university has already done half the work.
An agreement must exist between the two universities, and selection happens at your home institution.
It is not a visa you obtain by applying to a Korean university on your own.
The process therefore starts not in Korea but at your home international office.
Once selected, the Korean university issues a Certificate of Admission.
This document is the core of the application.
It comes under the name of the president or dean, and nothing begins without it.
You will also need proof of financial capability.
The government sets no single figure, but universities and consulates commonly look for around twenty million won.
Roughly twenty thousand US dollars.
Some consulates ask for more.
The amount is not the only thing that matters.
The money often must have sat in the account for a set period before the application date.
Money deposited in a hurry just before applying may not count.
A full scholarship can stand in place of a bank balance certificate.
The practical advantage of this status lies in part-time work.
With permission granted under the rules, you can apply for part-time work right after arrival.
Having no waiting period is the decisive difference from the language visa below.
The permitted hours, however, depend on your Korean.
Undergraduates who meet the TOPIK requirement may work up to twenty-five weekday hours; those who do not are cut to ten.
The required level varies by year of study, and graduate students face different criteria again.
On the same visa, one student can work more than twice as much as another.
3. The Language Visa, for Students Who Only Study the Language

The language visa is a route you take on your own.
You apply to a university language institute, get accepted, and then apply for the visa.
No agreement, no dispatch.
The threshold is lower, but conditions come attached.
First, education.
You must have completed high school or higher.
Next comes the ninety-day line.
Remember this number.
A short Korean course of ninety days or less can be taken without a visa.
Taking a one-month class while traveling is fine.
Cross ninety days, however, and the language visa becomes necessary.
And then there is this visa's most important condition.
Part-time work.
On a language visa, you may apply for a work permit only after six months from your entry date or status change date.
The rule admits no exceptions.
Vacation makes no difference.
If you planned to earn while studying, set aside funds for the first six months.
Plenty of students arrive without knowing this and watch their plans collapse.
Even after six months, conditions remain.
Your attendance must clear the bar, and permitted hours vary with your Korean ability.
Without the required TOPIK level, the limit typically falls to around ten hours a week.
Language students are also limited to a single workplace.
Degree students may hold up to two.
This leads to a simple calculation.
One test level translates directly into working hours.
Since Korean is why you came, preparing for the test is both study and a change in your living conditions.
Never work without permission.
If caught, you face more than a fine: extensions can be refused and a departure order issued.
Employers are penalized as well.
One more thing worth knowing.
You can begin on a language visa and later switch to a degree visa.
Learning Korean first and then entering a degree program is a common path.
The change can be made inside Korea without leaving the country.
Proof of course completion, a Korean language score, and financial capability will be required again.
4. What to Check Before Applying and After Arrival

Both visas share a common set of documents.
The application form, your passport, the fee, and a copy of the Certificate of Admission issued by the university.
Additional documents may be requested depending on nationality and circumstances.
Processing takes about twenty business days from the date of submission.
Verification of academic records or other facts extends it further.
To avoid missing the start of term, begin at least two months ahead.
Checking the university is essential.
Not every Korean university can sponsor a student visa.
You must confirm the school is a certified institution, and that list is updated every year.
Universities do lose that eligibility.
Do not rely on last year's information; asking the international office directly is the surest way.
The first thing to do after arrival is alien registration.
Within ninety days of entry you must register at the immigration office and receive an alien registration card.
This card is your ID and the key to daily life.
Opening a bank account, getting a phone line, applying for a work permit: none of it moves without it.
Here is a practical warning.
Think carefully before leaving Korea temporarily while the card is still pending.
Departing before registration is complete can affect your status and complicate re-entry.
If you plan a short trip home mid-semester, check with your international office and the immigration office first.
All post-arrival administration runs through a government portal called Hi Korea.
Registration appointments, extensions, and work permit applications are all there.
Creating an account before you fly makes the days after arrival much easier.
For phone inquiries, call 1345.
One final word.
Visa rules change with policy.
Financial thresholds, working hours, and the certified university list are all adjusted year to year.
What is written here may differ by the time you read it.
Before applying, confirm with the Korean embassy or consulate, your university's international office, and Hi Korea.
One check saves months.
There are many kinds of visas.
We will keep working through the ones that matter for study and daily life, one at a time.

■ FAQ
Q1. I am an exchange student. Can I use a language visa instead?
A1. It is not advisable. Credit-bearing programs fall under the degree visa group, and a mismatch between status and purpose can cause problems during review. Follow the guidance of your home international office and the host university.
Q2. Can I work part-time from the start on a language visa?
A2. No. You may apply for a work permit only six months after your entry or status change date, and the rule applies during vacations too. Even then you must meet attendance and Korean language requirements, and working without permission brings fines and consequences for your stay.
Q3. By when do I need the alien registration card?
A3. You must register within ninety days of entry. Book an appointment on Hi Korea and visit your local immigration office. Without the card you cannot open a bank account or apply for a work permit, so handle it first.
