How to Read Hangul: The Complete Roadmap
(외국인 한글 공부 완전 정복)

이 글 하단에서 오늘 배운 핵심 단어를 정리한 단어장을 확인할 수 있습니다.
You can check the vocabulary list summarizing today's key words at the bottom of this post.

한국어 공부는 한글 읽기에서 시작됩니다.
Korean study begins with learning to read Hangul.

방탄소년단 노래도, 블랙핑크 인터뷰도, 글자를 스스로 읽지 못하면 그림일 뿐입니다.
Even BTS songs and BLACKPINK interviews are just pictures if you cannot read the letters yourself.

메뉴판, 표지판, 자막, 가사는 모두 한글로 적혀 있고, 이를 보고 소리로 바꿔낼 수 있어야 의미 이해와 어휘 암기로 넘어갈 수 있습니다.
Menus, signs, subtitles, and lyrics are all written in Hangul, and you must be able to turn them into sound before moving on to understanding meaning and memorizing vocabulary.

한글 읽기는 한국어 학습의 첫 관문이며, 이 관문을 통과하지 못하면 어떤 공부도 겉돌게 됩니다.
Reading Hangul is the first gateway of Korean study, and without passing through it, any further study stays on the surface.

한글은 외워야 할 기호가 아니라 조립할 수 있는 원리입니다.
Hangul is not a set of symbols to memorize but a principle you can assemble.

좋아하는 그룹 이름 방탄소년단, 그중 정국이라는 이름도 자음과 모음 두 음절이 결합한 결과일 뿐입니다.
Even the group name BTS, and the member name Jungkook within it, are simply the result of combining consonants and vowels into two syllables.

이 한글조합원리를 이해하면 처음 보는 단어도 스스로 조합해서 읽어낼 수 있습니다.
Once you understand this Hangul combination principle, you can assemble and read even words you have never seen before.

단어 하나하나를 낱개로 외우는 방식에 기대면, 새로운 한글 단어를 만날 때마다 처음부터 다시 막히게 됩니다.
If you rely on memorizing each word individually, you get stuck again from scratch every time you meet a new Hangul word.

그래서 외국인이 한글을 읽기 위해 반드시 거쳐야 할 과정이 허브글 아래 4부입니다.
That is why the four parts below this hub post are the process every foreign learner must go through to read Hangul.

아래 순서대로 학습하시면 됩니다.
Please study them in the order below.

이 페이지를 즐겨찾기하고 4부까지 완주하세요.

1. 한글 읽기가 한국어 학습의 첫 번째 관문인 이유
1. Why Reading Hangeul Is the First Gateway to Learning Korean

메뉴판, 표지판, 자막, 가사는 모두 한글로 적혀 있습니다.
Menus, signs, subtitles, and song lyrics are all written in Hangul.

이를 보고 소리로 바꿔낼 수 있어야 의미 이해와 어휘 암기 단계로 넘어갈 수 있습니다.
You need to be able to convert what you see into sound before you can move on to understanding meaning and memorizing vocabulary.

한글을 읽지 못한 채 회화 교재나 단어장부터 펴는 것은 순서가 뒤바뀐 학습입니다.
Picking up phrasebooks or word lists before you can read Hangul puts your learning in the wrong order.

2. 한글에 조합 원리로 배워야 하는 이유
2. Why You Should Learn the Combination Principle

한글은 외울 글자가 아니라 조립할 수 있는 원리입니다.
Hangul isn't a set of shapes to memorize - it's a system you can assemble.

방탄소년단 멤버 이름 정국을 예로 들면, 정국은 ㅈ, ㅓ, ㅇ과 ㄱ, ㅜ, ㄱ 두 음절의 조합으로 이루어져 있습니다.
Take the name of BTS member Jungkook: 정국 is made up of two syllable blocks, ㅈ, ㅓ, ㅇ and ㄱ, ㅜ, ㄱ.

이 구조를 이해하면 처음 보는 단어도 스스로 조합해서 읽어낼 수 있습니다.
Once you understand this structure, you can sound out words you've never seen before on your own.

이 원리를 한 번 익히면 다른 단어에도 똑같이 적용할 수 있어 학습 속도가 빨라집니다.
Once you master this principle, you can apply it to any other word the same way, which speeds up your learning.

3. 1부부터 4부까지 무엇을 배우는가
3. What You'll Learn from Part 1 to Part 4

한글을 읽기 위해 외국인이 반드시 밟아야 할 단계는 다음 네 가지입니다.
To read Hangul, foreign learners need to go through four essential stages.

1부는 자음과 모음의 이름과 소리로 재료를 갖추고, 초성과 중성의 결합으로 첫 음절을 만드는 단계입니다. 뉴진스, 기생충 같은 이름으로 원리를 확인합니다.
Part 1 builds your foundation with the names and sounds of consonants and vowels, then combines an initial consonant and a vowel into your first syllable block. You'll check the principle using names like NewJeans and Parasite.

2부는 여기에 받침을 더해 실제 단어에 가까운 소리를 내는 단계입니다. 진, 부산행처럼 받침이 붙으면 소리가 완전히 달라집니다.
Part 2 adds final consonants (batchim) to bring you closer to real word sounds. Words like Jin and Train to Busan change completely once a batchim is added.

3부는 글자와 실제 발음이 다르게 나는 규칙을 배우는 단계입니다. 연음, 경음화, 격음화, 비음화를 익혀야 진짜 한국인 발음에 가까워집니다.
Part 3 covers the rules where spelling and actual pronunciation differ. You'll learn liaison, tensification, aspiration, and nasalization to get closer to authentic Korean pronunciation.

4부는 조합표로 전체를 정리하고, 아이돌 이름과 노래·영화 제목으로 직접 소리 내어 읽는 실전 훈련 단계입니다.
Part 4 pulls everything together with a full combination chart, then trains you to read idol names and song or movie titles out loud in real practice.

4. 학습 순서와 활용법
4. Learning Order and How to Use This Book

이 네 단계는 순서가 있는 계단입니다.
These four stages form a staircase with a fixed order.

반드시 1부부터 4부까지 순서대로 학습하시고, 각 부의 상세 원고에서 소주제별 원리와 예시를 확인하시기 바랍니다.
Please study Part 1 through Part 4 in order, and check the detailed principles and examples in each part's article.

이제 1부부터 순서대로 시작하세요.
Now start with Part 1 and follow the order.
