by Hunmin Institute(훈민학당) 2026. 7. 22.

Bunsik vs Hansik, Understanding the Difference and Truly Enjoying It

You can check the vocabulary list summarizing today's key words at the bottom of this post.

Have you ever felt confused, arriving in Korea, seeing a bunsik shop next to a convenience store and a neat baekban restaurant, wondering what the difference is?

Once you can tell the two words apart, you'll spend less time hesitating over a menu and can choose Korean food that fits your mood and situation much more easily.

Once you know the difference, your enjoyment of Korean food broadens.

1. What Is Bunsik

Bunsik originally started as a term referring to food made from flour or powder.

Today the meaning has broadened considerably, and it now refers to casual snacks you can enjoy quickly and cheaply, such as tteokbokki, gimbap, ramyeon, and jjolmyeon.

Menus like sundae, eomuk, and twigim are also included under bunsik.

At a bunsik shop like Gimbap Cheonguk found in every neighborhood, or in the bunsik alleys of traditional markets like Gwangjang Market and Tongin Market, you can find all these foods in one place.

Since the prices are affordable, it's also great to order several dishes together and enjoy a variety of flavors.

2. What Is Hansik

Hansik refers to a hearty, properly prepared meal complete with rice, soup, and side dishes.

It is a formal meal concept rooted in traditional Korean food culture, built around rice at the center with an array of side dishes.

Representative dishes that have won over taste buds worldwide, such as bulgogi, bibimbap, samgyeopsal, and kimchi-jjigae, belong to this category.

Combining it with a train trip to Jeonju Hanok Village lets you taste hansik made the traditional way, and in Seoul, you can enjoy a neat, formal hansik course in Insadong.

3. How Are Bunsik and Hansik Different

The biggest difference lies in how substantial the meal feels.

Bunsik is a casual way to quickly satisfy hunger, while hansik means sitting down to a properly set, hearty table.

If bunsik is a quick bite on the go, hansik is a table you sit down and properly enjoy.

Still, there's no need to see the two as entirely separate.

In a broader sense, bunsik can be seen as part of the same family as hansik, both belonging under the larger umbrella of Korean food.

4. How to Fully Enjoy Both

When your travel schedule is tight, it's a good idea to grab a quick meal at a bunsik shop, and on days with more time, plan to enjoy a proper hansik spread at a baekban restaurant or a hanjeongsik restaurant.

Stop by a traditional market to try a little of everything in the bunsik alley, and on another day, experience a neat hansik meal in a place like a hanok village — enjoying both this way lets you feel the diverse charm of Korean food even more deeply.
