끊다 Has Nothing to Do with Cutting

끊다를 영어로 옮기면 대개 cut이 됩니다. 그러나 회차를 끊다에서의 끊다는 무엇을 자르는 일과 아무 상관이 없습니다. 여러 번 받을 것을 미리 묶어 결제한다는 뜻입니다. 표를 끊다, 회원권을 끊다처럼 한국에서는 값을 치르고 이용 권한을 확보하는 자리에 이 동사를 씁니다.Run 끊다 through a translator and you usually get cut. But the 끊다 in 회차를 끊다 has nothing to do with cutting anything. It means paying up front for a set of visits. Korean uses this verb wherever you hand over money and secure the right to use something: 표를 끊다 for a ticket, 회원권을 끊다 for a membership.

잡아 드릴게요의 잡다도 마찬가지입니다. 무엇을 손으로 붙잡는다는 뜻이 아니라 자리와 일정을 확보해 둔다는 뜻입니다. 예약을 잡다, 날짜를 잡다로 넓게 쓰이므로 병원 밖에서도 자주 듣게 됩니다.The same goes for 잡다 in 잡아 드릴게요. It is not about holding something in your hand but about holding a slot or a date for you. You will hear it well beyond the clinic, in 예약을 잡다 and 날짜를 잡다.
