신고와 등록은 다릅니다

신고 and 등록 are not the same

영어로 옮기면 둘 다 registration이 됩니다. 그런데 한국어에서는 하는 사람이 다릅니다.In English both come out as registration. In Korean, who does the act is different.

신고는 내가 알리는 쪽입니다. 전입신고, 전월세 신고, 체류지 변경신고가 모두 그렇습니다. 내가 가서 이렇게 되었다고 알리면 끝나며 기관의 허락을 기다리지 않습니다. 그래서 기한이 붙습니다.신고 is you informing them. The move-in report, the lease report, and the change of residence report all work this way. You go, state that this is now the case, and it is done; you are not waiting for approval. That is why deadlines attach to it.

등록은 기관이 장부에 올리는 쪽입니다. 외국인등록, 부동산등기가 그렇습니다. 내가 신청하면 심사를 거쳐 기관이 올려 줍니다. 신고는 알리는 일, 등록은 올려 주는 일이라고 기억하면 창구에서 헷갈리지 않습니다.등록 is the office entering you into a ledger. Alien registration and property registration work this way. You apply, it is reviewed, and the office enters it. Remember 신고 as informing and 등록 as being entered, and the counter stops being confusing.
